Skin and Muscle System Engineer

Develop the artificial muscle and skin systems that give an android its form, movement and feel.

Team
Android Systems
Type
Full-time

Everything a person notices first about an android — how it looks, how it moves, how it feels to touch — comes from the soft tissue layer. This role develops it.

The work runs from anatomical reference through material design to the finished surface, and touches nearly every other system in the body.

What you'll do

  • Design artificial muscle structures that reproduce the form, elasticity and movement of real tissue.
  • Develop the parametric workflow that takes an anatomical reference to a manufacturable part.
  • Characterise materials against measured properties, and build the test methods that keep results honest.
  • Work on surface texture and finish, and on how skin, soft tissue and mechanism stay in the right relationship as the body moves.
  • Establish what happens to these materials at end of life, and factor that into what we choose to build with.
  • Take responsibility for the provenance of any human reference data the work depends on.

What we look for

What we're looking for

  • Materials or mechanical engineering experience with soft materials — elastomers, silicones, TPU or similar.
  • Experience with cellular or lattice structure design, and with simulating how they behave.
  • Hands-on fabrication experience, including the failure modes nobody writes down.
  • Willingness to work directly from medical and anatomical references.
  • Thoughtfulness about the full life of a material, not only its performance on day one.

Nice to have

  • Tissue characterisation or biomechanical testing experience.
  • Background in special effects, prosthetics, or dermatological modelling.
  • Familiarity with life-cycle assessment, or curiosity about learning it.
