Android Engineer (Face)

Design the facial actuation systems that let an android hold a natural, readable expression.

Team
Android Systems
Type
Full-time

Nexara builds androids designed to work alongside people rather than replace them. The face is where that intent is either believed or not — it is the first thing anyone reads, and the hardest thing to get right.

This role owns facial actuation end to end: the mechanisms beneath the surface, how they couple to soft tissue, and how we decide whether an expression is working.

What you'll do

  • Design and prototype compact actuation systems for facial movement, from concept through working hardware.
  • Work from human anatomy as the reference, so expression emerges from structure rather than being sculpted on.
  • Partner with the soft tissue team on how mechanism, tissue and skin behave together.
  • Build the test setups and evaluation criteria that tell us whether an expression reads correctly, and write them up so others can reproduce the result.
  • Contribute to how we handle likeness and reference data — where it comes from, how long we keep it, and what we agree not to do with it.
  • Help decide which expressive capabilities we build and which we deliberately leave alone.

What we look for

What we're looking for

  • Several years of mechanism or mechatronics design experience, with hardware you have taken from sketch to something that worked.
  • Strength in compact mechanism design, compliant mechanisms, or soft robotics.
  • Comfort working from anatomical reference, and the rigour to do it properly rather than approximately.
  • A habit of building the measurement before the mechanism.
  • Genuine interest in the effect this work has on the people who encounter it, not only in whether it functions.

Nice to have

  • Background in animatronics, prosthetics, or medical simulation.
  • Research experience in facial expression or perception.
  • Experience publishing methods, or a track record of writing down what did not work.
