Android Engineer (Body)

Own the android skeleton and actuation — the structure everything else is built on.

Team
Android Systems
Type
Full-time

The skeleton decides how a body takes shape, how it moves, and how everything above it can be built. Get it right and natural motion becomes possible; get it wrong and no amount of work on the surface will save it.

This role owns that layer: structure, joints, actuation and the path from where we are now to where we intend to be.

What you'll do

  • Design skeletal structure and joint modules against human proportion and range of motion.
  • Select and integrate actuation, and carry the architecture forward as our approach evolves — without requiring a redesign each time.
  • Package actuation, routing and thermal management inside the structure, so mechanism stays off the surface.
  • Design for service: decide early whether a fault means a module swap or a teardown, and choose the option that keeps a body repairable.
  • Treat material and component selection as a design constraint with real consequences, including where those materials come from.
  • Work with the safety team on compliance, force limits and how the body behaves when something fails.

What we look for

What we're looking for

  • Several years in robotics or mechatronics, through to hardware that shipped or at least survived testing.
  • Depth in joint design, transmission and actuator selection, with real opinions about the trade-offs.
  • Experience designing to anthropometric or biomechanical references.
  • Comfort owning a subsystem that everyone else depends on.
  • Interest in building machines that are safe to be near, and serviceable for years rather than months.

Nice to have

  • Tendon-driven or cable-driven actuation experience.
  • Background in exoskeletons, prosthetics, or rehabilitation robotics.
  • Experience taking a mechanical system through safety certification.
